In September of 2004 Nintendo unveiled Pokémon Emerald unto this earth. A sequel/remake hybrid of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. Admittedly, out of all the Pokémon regions, Hoenn is the one I am least familiar with. However I have played through it. Never like this though. Heck I've never done this on any Pokémon game. In retrospect it probably wasn't the wisest idea to do it with the region I know the least about, but whoops. Too late. I am going to be doing the Pokémon Emerald Randomized Challenge. Pretty much it's Pokémon Emerald, except all the Pokémon get switched around. You never know who you'll find and when. I could get MewTwo or Rayquaza as a starter. I could find a Torchic in the water. Who knows what'll happen. That's the fun of this. So what are we waiting for. My name is Evan, and welcome to My Randomized Emerald Adventure.

Going to admit I've never seen the Emerald sprite for Raticate. He looks so much more fat than in other games. A whole lot scarier to. So we continue along as I chose my gender (boy) and give myself a name

Professor Birch spits some cliched garbage about how our adventure well perhaps change us, and how I should create a bond with many different Pokémon. Then the game begins...

...in the back of a moving van? Yeah it seems your mom just stuffed you backed there. Eventually you can come out once you reach your new home in Littleroot Town.

If by tiring you meant extremely dangerous and uncomfortable, than yeah. Thanks mom. Guess I now know how you truly feel. Anyway we walk inside the house to see some Vigoroths moving some boxes. May I add they're doing a pretty lousy job of it.

The one on top is just moving back and forth and the bottom one is only flexing with the box. My mom used the word convenient to describe this earlier....yeah that was a bit off. Mom tells us to head upstairs to our room though and set the clock our dad gave us. Yeah, you actually have a dad in this game. He's never around though as he's a Gym Leader so he might as well not be there, but whatever. After I set the time I also read the journal on my desk.

Well I'm glad this game will be simple. Only two rules, it should be a piece of cake.
Oh and you can't forgot the potion that's in the beginning of most early Pokémon games.

Always helpful. So I walk downstairs to my mom telling me to quickly run to the TV as apparently my dad's Gym is on TV.

Unfortunately we don't get to see it as we come right at the end of the program. Maybe if I had running shoes I could've made it in time. Mom then tells me to go meet Professor Birch who's not only our new neighbor, but a friend of my father.
Finally we can begin exploring the town.
I discovered that apparently I, the ten year old kid, own the house my family currently lives in.

Maybe I should've shoved mom in the back of a moving truck. I decide to also talk to some NPCs as I don't think I've ever talked to the ones in this town.

His work is tearing his family apart.
It was at this point I realized I needed to speed up the dialogue of the game. While I was at it I also changed the text frame.

Anyway I find Birch's house and enter without permission because, RPG.

A daughter? Well I better put on the charm and go meet her. So I enter her room. Again without permission.

I see a Pokeball and then decide to take it I guess.

Of course the daughter enters and doesn't even mind I was snooping around her room. Man I wish real girls were like that. It'd significantly lower my collection of restraining orders.
Anyway her name is May and she pretty much tells us her life story.

Too bad I'm a snarky douchebag.

So she leaves. I decide to follow her. I swear I'm not creepy. When I try to go up to route 101 a little girl stops me.

Ugh, fine. I'll be nice I guess. Eve though I also have no Pokémon, but whatever. No problem. So we finally meet the professor...and he's being picked on by a Zigzagoon.

Yes, Hoenn's head of Pokémon information doesn't even know how to stop a Zigzagoon. Because of this he has to enlist the help of me, the 10 year old boy he barely even knows. Though I'm excited. We can finally pick our starter, and get this randomized game on the road. So who are the starters.

Larvitar. Cool.

Wurmple. Not so cool.

And Treecko. I like Treecko, but he's someone you can use as a starter in the regular game. So I'm not gonna use him. So I now have a choice between Wurmple and Larvitar. I think the choice is pretty simple.
Wurmple, duh.

Nah, JK. I of course I chose Larvitar. Which is especially cool since I feel Larvitar is one of those Pokémon I need to use more. Though admittedly one thing kinda bums me out about this. Out of the three choices for my starter (which other than Larvitar was rather disappointing.) Larvitar takes the longest time to evolve.

Professor Birch thanks us for saving him. He then says his daughter's on route 103. His daughter's May by the way. For some reason he wants us to see her. Now we finally get to explore the wild. I'm so excited to see what interesting and awesome Pokémon we'll....

Are you fricking kidding me. This is my first random encounter. OK, well that's fine. There's gotta be something cool here. Let's try again.

Another Magikarp. Great. Can I please get something else.

OK....something else that's good. For awhile all I could find were Kakunas and Magikarps. Eventually I did find something different that I may actually consider putting on my team.

Igglybuff. It's so adorable. Unfortunately I don't have Pokeballs yet, so I can't catch it. I did try to kill it for experience though. That didn't exactly work out. Melvin (which is what I nicknamed my Larvitar) fell asleep.

Whoops. So I had to run. Eventually I made it to Oldale Town. I hit up the Pokémon Center and then went to the store to spend all my money.

Again...whoops.

At least I'm prepared though. Since I don't know what I'll be facing out there I figured it couldn't hurt. Since this isn't anything like regular emerald who knows what we'll see. After I got done preparing I went to Route 103 to see May. I found some cool Pokemon there.

Got Cascoon. One of Wurmple's evolutions. So since I could've just found Wurmple's evolution not even 20 minutes into this game I would've been completely stupid choosing Wurmple as my starter.

We also got Whismur. Who I like a lot. Not going to get him though as even though he doesn't appear this early in the game normally he still appears pretty dang early. The fun of doing a randomized Pokemon game is doing something completely different from the original game. Same adventure, same region. Different experience though, because there are different Pokémon. This is too close to the normal game for me. So pass. I eventually made it to May.

And she has a Treecko.

Oh this is going be fun. Since Larvitar is ground and rock type any grass type move this Pokémon learns will do 4X damage to Melvin. Luckily the only attacking move May's Treecko has is Pound so right now she can't do much to me. It's not very effective.

Each pound literally only took one HP from me. So yeah I wrecked Treecko...this time. In case your wondering, by the way, Melvin's only damage inducing move right now is Bite. Which is an awesome first move to have. Eventually I did make Treecko faint.

And Melvin grew to LV. 6. *Sniff* they grow up so fast.

May tells me to meet her back at the lab. On my way down there I ran into a Marill, another awesome Pokémon, on Route 103.

Other than that all the other Pokémon I saw on my way down there were ones I mentioned earlier.
Finally at the lab.

So Birch gives us the Pokédex as per usual and then May gives us Poké Balls.

No, May it's the other way around. I'm supposed to give you Poké balls......I'm not sorry.
After that I just kinda sat there for a few seconds not realizing I could go now.

He's not as common as I thought he'd be. Anyway it's time to leave, and in the tradition of Pokémon I have to become the very best. Got to get permission from mother first though.

Larvitar is pretty cute. She then realizes I'm going out on a journey and...seems rather OK with it. In fact she even gives me running shoes.

Why I can't just start off with these I don't know, but whatever.

I bet once I leave she's going to get drunk and have a party. But our adventure in the world of Pokémon can finally begin. And yeah, I will get them. I'm gonna be the very best like no one ever one. This is the start of one epic journey. I can tell.

And a new rival

Next time: My Mortal Enemy
The game starts like every other Pokémon game. With a brief introduction from the professor of the region. In this games case it's Professor Birch.
By the way I should probably mention I'm using a phone emulator so that's why you see all the buttons floating around on screen. Anyway instead of the Pokémon he carries normally, Birch instead has a Raticate

Going to admit I've never seen the Emerald sprite for Raticate. He looks so much more fat than in other games. A whole lot scarier to. So we continue along as I chose my gender (boy) and give myself a name

I also found Spheal. Which is fricking awesome. You usually don't see him until way later. Because of that I usually don't use him. So this is one I'll possibly catch when I get Pokeballs.

A battle begins.

And she has a Treecko.

Oh this is going be fun. Since Larvitar is ground and rock type any grass type move this Pokémon learns will do 4X damage to Melvin. Luckily the only attacking move May's Treecko has is Pound so right now she can't do much to me. It's not very effective.

Other than that all the other Pokémon I saw on my way down there were ones I mentioned earlier.
And yes, I will be doing that every time someone say Oh, hi Evan.
As for you May, you have disgraced our family name. I no longer have a daughter.

So Birch gives us the Pokédex as per usual and then May gives us Poké Balls.

No, May it's the other way around. I'm supposed to give you Poké balls......I'm not sorry.
After that I just kinda sat there for a few seconds not realizing I could go now.
I decided to check the Pokédex though. I was going to show you Larvitar's Pokédex entry, however since Larvitar normally isn't found in Hoenn there is no Pokédex entry for him that I can see. I guess I need to upgrade the Pokédex first. I did decide to check a few things though. Like you know how you can see the area a Pokémon is found in through the area tab. I decided to see if it would use the randomized locations or still use the locations from the regular game. I checked it on Treecko.
And, yeah it seems to use randomized locations cause otherwise nothing would be flashing since you can't normally find Treecko in the wild.
I also checked Magikarp's location. Luckily we'll be done seeing him pretty soon.

He's not as common as I thought he'd be. Anyway it's time to leave, and in the tradition of Pokémon I have to become the very best. Got to get permission from mother first though.
